Aladdin Resort & Casino (Second)
About
The second Aladdin Resort & Casino was a $1.2 billion Arabian Nights-themed megaresort that opened on August 18, 2000, on the site of the original Aladdin Hotel which had been imploded in 1998. The new Aladdin featured 2,567 rooms, a 64,470 square foot casino, and the massive 7,000-seat Theatre for the Performing Arts (where Celine Dion had considered performing). The resort also included Desert Passage, a 475,000 square foot Moroccan-themed shopping mall. Despite its grand ambitions, the second Aladdin was plagued by financial troubles from the start, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2001, just weeks after the September 11 attacks devastated the tourism industry. The property was sold in 2004 to a group led by Planet Hollywood and Starwood Hotels, and was rebranded on April 17, 2007, as Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. Desert Passage was also rebranded as Miracle Mile Shops. Planet Hollywood continues to operate on the site today.
