The Western Hotel & Casino
About
The Western Hotel & Casino opened in 1970 as the Western Hotel & Bingo Parlor on Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas. It was best known for housing what was once the world's largest bingo parlor with 1,020 seats, making bingo the primary draw rather than traditional casino gaming. The property was part of legendary downtown casino operator Jackie Gaughan's empire and featured 116 rooms, an 8,925 square foot casino with just 5 table games and 200 slot machines. The Western served the budget-conscious downtown market for over four decades before closing on January 16, 2012, as the Tamares Group (which had purchased Gaughan's downtown properties) cited decreased demand for bingo. Parts of the building were demolished in 2013, and the site was later purchased by Tony Hsieh's Downtown Project as part of his vision to revitalize downtown Las Vegas.
